I was actually in the middle of writing a post about how I’ve been backsliding in both my diet and exercise when I got onto Instagram and saw Kristen’s (from Dine and Dish) post about how she had teamed up with some other bloggers and they were all going to train for a 5k.  They all live in different cities, so they’re all picking a 5k in their respective city on September 8th…and they invited others to join, too!  They call themselves the Red Faced Runners, which is the perfect description for me running in Arizona (or anywhere, for that matter)!

That was just the motivation I needed!

So, I went searching for a 5k here on September 8th…and there isn’t one.  So, I kept searching and found a race on September 3rd.  It offers both a 5k and an 8-mile race.

And I signed up for the 8-mile race.  *gulp*

I haven’t been able to run nearly as far here in Arizona as I was in Colorado, so I’m pretty nervous, but I needed a reason to step up my running game…and Daniel has faith that I can do it, so I’m trying to psych myself up and push myself.  I may be walking a big portion of it, but I’m really hoping to train myself to be able to run most of it!

Oh, and did I mention that the Red Faced Runners have a uniform?  The little cape on the back is my favorite part.  I’m hoping these socks give me super running powers.  I need them.

I learned a couple days ago to plan my route to include mostly shade.  I tried running in the morning (I have been running at night), because the temperature is about 10 degrees cooler in the morning.  BUT, I quickly discovered that the 10 degrees makes no difference at all when you’re running in the blazing sunshine with no shade in sight.  Cacti do not provide the best shade.

So, we drove around our neighborhood in search of shady routes and discovered…one.  The park is the only shaded place around here, so it looks like I’ll be running 1/2 mile circles around the baseball fields and playground.  Or I’ll force myself to wake up and run before the sun rises.  I’ve woken up at 5am for two mornings in a row now.  I’m pretty sure that’s a record for me.

In other good news, we’re making a quick trip to Albuquerque to meet some friends this weekend and I’ll have a running buddy there!  It may only be one run, but we’ll rock it out.  A living, breathing (and did I mention awesome?) person is way better company than my iPhone.  Can’t. Wait.

This morning was a short run, but it was all part of the plan!  I’m still clueless about training for races, so I asked my Boston-Marathon-running-BFF, Maryam, to come up with a plan for me to follow.  So, the hope is that she’ll tell me what to do everyday and I’ll be able to do it.  We’ll see how that goes.  She’s also training for a race, so we’re training together, even in different states!

I’m excited.

I can do this.

Right?…

:-/

P.S. Yes, I changed the font around here.  Apparently Comic Sans is against some sort of font law or something.  I aim to please.  :-)
